Solo Project - 4 months
While before this project I'd been developing my game and story skills for quite some time - creating game systems, writing stories in various mediums, experimenting with both traditional and interactive forms - The Myxologist was my first guided, concentrated effort writing a script for a game. The excitement I felt when I got to work was so palpable that, when coming up with my concept, I turned that sense of passion into the core of the game's world, creating a mechanical system powered by the joy and fulfillment people find in their interests. In this urban fantasy version of Denver, I sought to explore how people of all stripes could find empowerment in their interests by elevating that energy to literal magic.
During this project I:
Admittedly, my enthusiasm was at times a stumbling block - initial miscommunication (and wild optimism) about the project's small scope led to some issues of focus when planning next steps and organizing my ideas, which were difficult to rein back in later. However, I was able to stay on target, and the finished product was approved by the professor. Plus, that enthusiasm hasn't died, and has allowed me to keep improving, both on my design skills and on this project. While before I said that this was my first game script, it would perhaps be more accurate to say that it is, as recently I've returned to the project, making revisions and expansions to eventually bring it to its full scale. Hopefully someday the world will be able to experience The Myxologist fully - what can I say, I believe in the power of passion.
During this project I:
- Created the player character, her 4 party members, and other NPCs
- Researched and developed the game's setting, both real (the setting of Denver)
and invented (the history of Talents and Troubles) - Concepted the game's mechanics
- Drafted and wrote 7 quests
